I have been reading so much about our upcoming cruise. I am sure all of you have been doing your research too. We should probably all try and decide on what ports we should have a private tour and which ports we should do on our own.
This is what I have come up with so far:
Sunday May 4th Venice Depart 5 pm
Monday May 5th Bari 1 pm - 6 pm Only one other ship in port. (Costa Magica)
Tuesday May 6th Katakolon 1 pm - 7 pm Only Costa Magica in port with us.
Wed May 7th Thira/Santorino 9 - 5 No other ship in port with us. So Lucky.
Thurs May 8th Athens/Piraeus 7:30 - 4:30 Alone again.
Friday May 9th Corfu 12:30 - 6:30 Alone again.
Sat May 10th Dubrovnik 8 am to 2 pm Costa Magica
Sun May 11th Return to Venice 8 am Alone again.
I have been mostly focused on the Port of Dubrovnik so far. Local currency is Kunas (5 K equals $1 U.S.)
It sounds like it is best to take a Taxi from the port. There are shuttle busses provided by the cruise ship (but the shuttle will drop you off at "Pile" which is the main entrance to the Old Town and the Wall. So from what I have read is that a taxi to the cable car. The cable car was highly recommended $15 Euros.
From the cable car walk down to Ploce gate and begin the walk of city walls (18Euros). It takes between 1.5 and 2 hours to walk the city wall. Ploce will get you into the south end of Old Town.
Some may want to walk the entire wall.
I think that it would be too early for lunch at this point so sightseeing and walk and shop along Stradum toward Pile. Pile is the main entrance for the wall walk but there are a lot more steps if you enter here.
Taxi back to the ship from Pile (10 Euros).
This is what I have read as being the best use of time and beating the crowds.
We could also do a Panarama Tour by taxi.
I am going to look at the Frommers walking tour to see what is suggested here.
There is also a Ferry which takes 15 minutes to the island of Lokrum.
Shopping - Croation Embrodiery (Konavle embroidery). Shop inside town - not at port. There is also a small green market located at Gundilic Square.
Karen and Lauren would like to look at Santorini.
So lets chat about what we would like to do. I would like to set up a blog of some kind. Will figure out how to do that.
Esther
